To all who shall see these presents,

Greeting:

Know ye, That reposing special trust and confidence in the wisdom, knowledge and integrity of Lothrop Lewis, of Gorham, in the County of Cumberland, Esquire, hath nominated and by and with the advice and consent of our Council, do appoint him, Commissioner, in the part of this state, to meet and conclude a Treaty with the Penobscot Tribe of Indians, or such person or persons, as shall by said Indians be lawfully authorized to act in their behalf; hereby authorizing and empowering him to execute and perform all the powers and duties to said commission by notice of a Resolve of the Legislature of this State passed the twentieth day of June last past, reserving however to the Government of this State, the power and right to ratify and confirm at pleasure the doings of said Commissioner in the premises: To have and to hold said office, with all the privileges thereunto appertaining, during the pleasure of the Governor and Council, for the time being. In Testimony, whereof, I have caused these letters to be made patent, and our Seal of the State to be hereunto affixed, the first day of July, in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and twenty; and of the Independence of the United States the forty fifth.
