in the following words, "Ordered that the Hon William P. Preble one of the Justices of the Supreme Judicial Court, be respectfully requested to favor this House with his opinion and his reasons therefor on the questions submitted by the House, to the Justices of said Court on the 11th instant"- and the question was taken by yeas and nays and decided thus: Yeas eight seven Nays forty eight (see appendix page 277.)

Ordered that the committee on the Judiciary be instructed to inquire what alterations if any are necessary in the law prescri bing the mode of returning, examining and ascertaining the election of representatives in classes, composed of more than one town. read + passed. Sent up for concurrence.

Ordered that the committee n the Judiciary be instructed to inquire if any alterations are necessary in the Laws relating to the duties of Selectmen in laying out Streets + highways.- and also to inquire if any alterations or further provisions are necessary in the Law defining the power and duties of Surveyors of Highways - also to consider on the expediency of providing by law for the choice of Harbour Masters in the several towns in this State where the same may be deemed necessary and to define their powers and duties - read + passed. Sent up for concurrence.

Ordered that the Senate be requested to send to this House (now upon their last years files) the petition of Jeremiah Bailey Judge of Probate for the County of Lincoln. read + passed. Sent up.

Resolve relating to Markhand Island was read a second time + passed to be engrossed in concurrence with the Senate.

Bill to set off Cornelius Thompson from Bowdoin to Lisbon was read a third time + passed to be engrossed in concurrence with the Senate.
