To all who shall see these Presents.

Greeting.

Know ye, That Jonathan G. Hunton our Governor, reposing special trust ad confidence in the ability, patriotism, valor and military science of Samuel G. Ladd, of Hallowell, in the County of Kennebec, Esquire, hath nominated, and by and with the advice and consent of our Council, appointed the said Samuel G. Ladd, Adjutant General of the Militia of this State, with the rank of Brigadier General.

We therefore, do hereby authorize and empower him to discharge the duties of that Office according to law; and military rule and discipline. And all inferior Officers are hereby commanded to obey him in his capacity; and he will observe and follow such orders and instructions, as he shall, from time to time receive from the Commander in Chief.

To have and to hold the same Office, together with all the powers, privileges and emoluments thereto of right appertaining, unto him the said Samuel G. Ladd, for the term of four years, if he shall so long behave himself well in said Office, unless sooner removed by the Governor and council for the time being.

In testimony whereof, We have caused these Letters to be made Patent, and our Seal to be hereunto affixed: Witness our Governor, at the Council Chamber, in Portland, the thirtieth day of March, in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and thirty: and of the Independence of the United States the fifty fourth.
