to command the position when the pursuing force of the enemy was expected to appear.- The enemy's artillery came up and the engagement commenced about noon, and a continuous and heavy firing was kept up on both sides throughout the afternoon-our position in front of new batteries being extremely uncomfortable a portion of the time, the shells exploding about us thick and fast.- We held our ground as rear guard during the till about 2 1/2 A.M. Wednesday ( 2nd ) when we left the field and took up our march for Harrison Landing
