The members present were called to order by Mr Boutelle of Kennebec, who took the chair. Mr Dunlap of Cumberland was chosen to wait on the Governors and Council and inform them that quorum of the Senate are assembled and ready to be qualified according to the Constitution. Whereupon, the Governor, attended by the Council and Secretary of State and the Sheriff of the county of Kennebec, came in and in their presence the Senators returned as a foresaid took and subscribed the oaths prescribed by the Constitution to qualify them to discharge their respective duties of office. When the governors and Council had retired, the Senators present proceeded to the choice of a President, and On motion of Mr Meqquire, Ordered that a committee be chosen to receive, sort, and count the votes for a President, and Messrs. Meqquire, Scammon & Talbot were appointed said committee; who having attended to the duty assigned them, reported that the whole number of votes given in for a President was 20 Necessary to constitute an election 11 Robert P. Dunlap had 18 Eliakim Scammon " 1 Theodore Ingalls " 1 Mr Dunlap was then declared elected, signified his acceptance of the office of President by an address and took the chair.
