the morning ( 28th ) -coming up with the brigade near Kettle Run, where we joined in the advance of our troops upon Manassas which place, with the entire vicinity , had been desolated by a raid of the enemy, who had left the place the same morning.- From Manassas we marched to Centerville, arriving there at 9 P.M. and bivouacking for the night.- Capt. Rollins of Co. C., who had remained behind when the regiment left Alexandria on the 23ed was taken prisoner by the rebels at Bristow Station on the 27th.- Friday ( 29th ) we moved forward at 6 A.M. with the column advancing upon Bull Run when the enemy had taken position and where our forces had engaged him the previous evening- Kearny's division took its position on the extreme right of the line of battle about 9 A.M. - Our regiment, in company with the 40th and 101st New York, was ordered forward to engage the enemy about 10 1/2 o'clock.- As we advanced to the brow of a hill we came suddenly upon one of the enemy's batteries, so supported by a force posted in a ravine between us and the battery that it was impossible for us to take it- The battery immediately opened upon us with grape and shell, making it necessary for us to retire by the left flank to a position in the woods, where we engaged the enemy for an hour and a half till we received orders to retire to the rear,
