On one morning bright and early we went aboard of the cars with light harts and steemed off for Alexandria where we arived in due time and took the steemboat to Washington where we soon arrived. Capt J F Land [Joseph F Land] was in charge of our squad together with Capt Clark.

Transportation was soon procured and we took pasage on the train for Baltimore, then threw the principal city of Philadelphia, New York, Boston, Portland, and to Augusta Me, where, we wer to receive orders and scatter out in our special duty of recruiting.

We staid at Augusta two nights and then Albert Roberts and myself was asigned to our post at Lewiston where we found friends and [?].

We went by way of Brunswick, and while waiting for the Lewiston train I see an old friend and neighbor R. I. Knowles step up to the ticket offices
