There are 244 names of Maine people listed in WHO'S WHO IN AMERICA, 1948•49 and a large number of Maine's irominent.sons have found it iossible to stay here and make their mark in the world directly from Maine. In case you wish to baak up the fact that famous sons of Maine have been a regular product of the state since colonial days we are sending a,list of Maine Im• mortals and a clipping from the MAINE BOOK by Dunnack entitled Maine's Contribution to Literature. Since you may wish to put in a few statistics (t~ey now seem to be a requisite to an "impressive" article) we have included the table which we have made up from WHO'S WHO IN AMERICA. Probably you know of Professor R.P.T.Coffin's article written in the same good cause and appearing in the American Mercury, January, 1948. We can lend you this issue Ir you have missed it and do not have access to it. It will be a great relief to many of us State-of-Mainers to read your article. Many who have come into the library have been positively sizzling with vexation. It seems all the worse since Maine was given such.an unscholarly dismis• sal by one who was acclaimed by reviewers for his excess of scholarship.
