Camp of Second Regt Maine Vols Near Falmouth Virginia March 16, 1863

I hereby certify, that Sergt Byron C. Gilmore, Co. G, Second regiment of Maine Vols. is a good soldier, and faithful to duty. As a Sergeant, he is respectful, prompt, and efficient, and I would cheerfully recommend him, as one suitable for a higher position, should the Government see fit to bestow it upon him.

O..L. Getchell Capt. Co G 2nd Regt Maine Vols

Hd Qtrs 2nd Me Vols. March 18, 1863 I heartily concur in Capt Getchells recommendation of Sergt Gilmore, knowing him to be a brave and faithful soldier and should feel gratified if he could be placed in a position more advanced than his present one, as he has certainly earned the right to it by nearly two years hard service as a noncommissioned officer.
