  Dr Sir  I have been

asked by influential persons why I do- not ask your attention to young [in brackets: Horatio] Staples- He is a man of such a [stamp?] as would seem to do any one good to see promoted He left Bangor (his parents reside here) with the Maine 2nd enlisted as a private has worked his way up to 1st Lieut had command of his Company some 3 mo while his Captain was home sick has been in seven different Battles He is a- young Christian one who live up to his profession + has thereby won the respect + esteem of many who have known of his career. I ask if you can spare the time to the enclosed entreat of his letter to his young Brother just enlisted- He is a deserving man + if had had rich parents would been a Brig Genl has earned it- in moving up the present Regiment here in Bangor it would be pleasing to see such worth promoted + a word from you to Gov Washburn would do it.
