[page 90] Dr. Butler: I find there prevails a wrong impression in regard to my position here and what I have said before the Committee. And the question has been asked, how is, after I ^have said I was under obligation to some of the officers of the hospital that I should appear here- Mr. Pettangall: It seems to me that a personal explanation is hardly pertinant [pertinent] to this case. Dr. Butler: All I wanted to say was to disabuse the minds of the Committee that I was here to make a personal attack, and ^ to express a desire that we might avoid with the witnesses any thing like a personal attack upon any officer.
Testimony of Dr. E.E. Neal, sworn I read a report of the first meeting of the Committee in the Portland Press, and not satisfied with that, I wrote to the Chairman saying that I would make a statement- in reference to the matter, as I considered it. And now if I am to be merely as a witness ^ that is one thing; if merely to make a statement, that is another. It is immaterial to me which. Mr. Morrill: My recollection is this: that the Dr. wrote me some thing in regard to coming before the Committee, and I appointed today, saying that we should have a regular meeting, and he
