Camp of the 2nd Maine Regt Harrisons Landing Va July 10th 1862

Gen'l Hodgdon Dear Sir

Having been advised by our friend to endeavor to obtain an appointment of Field Officer in one of the new Regiments now being formed or to to be formed in our State, and having no intimate acquaintances in Augusta to bring forward my case in its proper light before the Governor, I take the liberty to respectfully solicit your aid in presenting to his Excelency the enclosed recommendations and say to him that should he see fit to promote me, my highest aim will be to care for the welfare of the command and to sustain the honor and reputation of our noble State who has done so much towards quelling this accursed Rebellion.

Hoping to hear from you as early as convenient I am with respect your Obt Svt Daniel F. Sargent Capt. Co H 2nd Maine Regt

PS I believe I am the oldest Capt in commision from the State DFS
