Hon I Washburn Jr. Governor, State of Maine

Dear Sir I see by published acocunts that you have seen fit in your wisdom to appoint Daniel Chaplin Esq. of Bangor now Major of the 2nd Me. Regt. Vols., Colonel of the 18th Regt now being recruited. Permit me to say that the appointment is a good one & he is every way worthy of it. As I now belong to the same Regt. & know him well and I am desirous of serving under him, therefore if the places are not all supplied in the 18th Regt I should like a position
