Hon. Isaac Washburn Jr. Gov. State of Maine

Dear Sir,

In regards to the enclosed letter from Mr. Simpson I would say that my object in visiting you is principally to carry letters of recommendation from gentlemen of this city who have personally known my brother, Richard Kelleher, and who are anxious that his services as a soldier, and which his capabilities entitle him to, should recieve some acknowledgment. These gentlemen are Hon. S.H. Blake, Chas. P. Brown, Esq., E.S. Coe, Esq. Hon. Arron A. Wing, Major Stetson and others.

If you think well of granting him the privilage of recruiting, as mentioned by Mr. Simpson, or otherwise giving him a commission - which is nothing more than an act of justice - there is no necessity of me visiting you. Richard is at present in the U.S. General Hospital at Anapolis, Md. having been slightly wounded in the late battles. He is principally suffering from debility. It would not only serve his health very much to return, but he would be the means of enlisting many Irishmen in this city. He is a young man about 27 years of age, of good intelligence, and of a good moral character. He is also spoken well of by those who have lately returned
