Lieut. [struck through] Gov. John Neptune.
Neptune was one of the most noted of the Indian hunters. He was a tall, well-proportioned man weighing about 225 pound. He had a Roman nose, the distinguishing trait of all the Neptune family. He was noted here among the whites as being a man of great intellect He died about 1860 [struck through] May 8 1865 (gr.st) aged between 80 and 90 years. One of his most famous hunts was his trip to the St. Lawrence with a company of eight Indians. They went across onto the North Shore, then in possession of the Hudson Bay Company and stayed there several months living almost entirely on Beaver meat without salt. They had to make the whole trip without provisions, and they dared not go to the Hudson Bay trading posts.
