Conclusion In Afro-Caribbean children, mean radiographic 2D4D was lower than that of White children and sexual dimorphism of 2D4D (boys less then girls) was confined to the distal phalanx and fingertip soft-tissue. In contrast in White children, there were no sex differences in the distal phalanx but there were in the middle-, proximal and composite phalanges (boys less then girls). We discuss whether these differences in 2D4D are widespread among Blacks and Whites and the implications for the interpretation of radiographic 2D4D and morphological soft-tissue 2D4D across macro-ethnic groups.Plants are continuously exposed to agents that can generate DNA lesions. The Xeroderma Pigmentosum type B (XPB) protein is a DNA helicase shown to be involved in NER and is also an essential subunitof the Transcription Factor IIH (TFIIH) complex. XPB was found to be a single copy gene in eukaryotes, but found as a tandem duplication in the plant Arabidopsis thaliana, AtXPB1 and AtXPB2. We aimed to investigate whether the XPB in tandem duplication was common within members of the Brassicaceae. We analyzed genomic DNA of species from different tribes of the family and the results indicate that the tandem duplication occurred in Camelineae tribe ancestor, of which A. thaliana belongs, at approximately 8 million years ago. Further experiments were devised to study possible functional roles for the A. thaliana AtXPB paralogs. A non-coincident expression profile of the paralogs was observed in various plant organs, developmental and cell cycle stages. AtXPB2 expression was observed in proliferating cells and clustered with the transcription of other components of the TFIIH such as p44, p52 and XPD/UVH6 along the cell cycle. AtXPB1 gene transcription, on the other hand, was enhanced specifically after UV-B irradiation in leaf trichomes. Altogether, our results reported herein suggest a functional specialization for the AtXPB paralogs while the AtXPB2 paralog may have a role in cell proliferation and repair as XPB of other eukaryotes, the AtXPB1 paralog is most likely implicated in repair functions in highly specialized A. thaliana cells.Objectives Although contact precaution is generally recommended in situations where coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is suspected, there is limited evidence on environmental contamination of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Therefore, we conducted environmental surveillance on SARS-CoV-2 contamination in 2 different healthcare settings. Methods Viral contamination was investigated on the environment of 2 hospitals that had admitted 13 COVID-19 patients. In hospital A, 5 patients with pneumonia occupied negative pressure rooms. In hospital B, 8 asymptomatic patients shared 2 common 4-bed rooms. Most rooms were poorly cleaned or disinfected. Environmental swab were collected from inside and outside the rooms and were tested using real-time RT-PCR for the detection of SARS-CoV-2. Results In hospital A, SARS-CoV-2 was detected in 10 of 57 (17.5%) samples from inside the rooms including the Ambu bag and infusion pump. Two samples obtained at more than 2 meters from the patients showed positive results. In hospital B, 3 of 22 (13.6%) samples from inside the rooms were positive. Areas outside the rooms, such as the anteroom, corridor, and nursing station, were all negative in both hospitals. Conclusions Hospital surfaces surrounding patients were contaminated by SARS-CoV-2. Our findings support the value of strict contact precaution, routine cleaning and disinfection in the management of COVID-19 patients.Evidence suggests that rising drug misuse, particularly of prescription painkillers, is more closely linked with period increases in reported pain among Americans of the same age range than with deterioration in mental health, but it is unclear whether those cross-sectional associations reflect causal effects of pain and mental health on drug misuse. Using data from the 1995-96, 2004-05, and 2013-14 waves of a nationwide cohort study, we evaluate the effects of pain and mental health on subsequent misuse of prescription painkillers and sedatives. Logistic regression is applied to model drug misuse (separately for painkillers and sedatives) as a function of predictors measured at the previous wave; respondents who reported misuse of that drug type at the prior wave are excluded from the analysis. Mental health is an important predictor of both painkiller and sedative misuse, whereas pain plays a much bigger role in painkiller misuse. Frequency of joint aches and stiffness has the strongest effect on subsequent painkiller misuse, although mental health yields substantial incremental predictive ability above and beyond pain. Negative affect, positive affect, and psychological well-being have notable effects on sedative misuse, while pain (particularly backache) makes only a small incremental contribution to sedative misuse. We suspect that increases over time in pain levels may have played a bigger role than mental health in explaining the rise in prescription painkiller misuse and may have contributed to growing misuse of sedatives. Despite existing standards there is a lot of variation in terms of measuring and calculating HRT, which complicates research and application. Objective This systematic review outlines and evaluates the methodological spectrum of HRT research, especially filtering criteria, parameter calculation and thresholds. Approach The analysis includes all research papers written in English that have been published before 12.10.2018, are listed on PubMed and involve calculation of HRT parameter values. Main results HRT assessment is still being performed in various ways and important specifications of the methodology are not given in many articles. Nevertheless, some suggestions regarding HRT methodology can be made A normalised turbulence slope should be used to uncouple the parameter from heart rate and frequency of extrasystoles.
