Brassinosteroids are polyhydroxysteroids that are involved in different plants' biological functions, such as growth, development and resistance to biotic and external stresses. Because of its low abundance in plants, much effort has been dedicated to the synthesis and characterization of brassinosteroids analogs. Herein, we report the synthesis of brassinosteroid 24-nor-5β-cholane type analogs with 23-benzoate function and 22,23-benzoate groups. The synthesis was accomplished with high reaction yields in a four-step synthesis route and using hyodeoxycholic acid as starting material. All synthesized analogs were tested using the rice lamina inclination test to assess their growth-promoting activity and compare it with those obtained for brassinolide, which was used as a positive control. The results indicate that the diasteroisomeric mixture of monobenzoylated derivatives exhibit the highest activity at the lowest tested concentrations (1 × 10-8 and 1 × 10-7 M), being even more active than brassinolide. Therefore, a simple synthetic procedure with high reaction yields that use a very accessible starting material provides brassinosteroid synthetic analogs with promising effects on plant growth. This exploratory study suggests that brassinosteroid analogs with similar chemical structures could be a good alternative to natural brassinosteroids.Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is considered the most common liver disorder, affecting around 25% of the population worldwide. It is a complex disease spectrum, closely linked with other conditions such as obesity, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and metabolic syndrome, which may increase liver-related mortality. In light of this, numerous efforts have been carried out in recent years in order to clarify its pathogenesis and create new prevention strategies. Currently, the essential role of environmental pollutants in NAFLD development is recognized. Particularly, endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) have a notable influence. EDCs can be classified as natural (phytoestrogens, genistein, and coumestrol) or synthetic, and the latter ones can be further subdivided into industrial (dioxins, polychlorinated biphenyls, and alkylphenols), agricultural (pesticides, insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides), residential (phthalates, polybrominated biphenyls, and bisphenol A), and pharmaceutical (parabens). Several experimental models have proposed a mechanism involving this group of substances with the disruption of hepatic metabolism, which promotes NAFLD. These include an imbalance between lipid influx/efflux in the liver, mitochondrial dysfunction, liver inflammation, and epigenetic reprogramming. It can be concluded that exposure to EDCs might play a crucial role in NAFLD initiation and evolution. However, further investigations supporting these effects in humans are required. Background and Objectives To quantify the change in intraocular pressure (IOP) after phacoemulsification in patients having undergone femtolaser assisted cataract surgery (FLACS), and study the influence of the use of ultrasound on this change. Setting Jules-Gonin Eye Hospital, University Department of Ophthalmology, Lausanne, Switzerland. Materials and Methods Interventional study. Methods All consecutive cases operated with FLACS and with complete data for the studied parameters were selected for inclusion in the study. Data had been prospectively collected and was analysed retrospectively. Linear regression was performed to explore the association of change in IOP with time of measure, ultrasound use, sex, age, and duration of surgery. Idelalisib clinical trial Results There was a mean decrease in intraocular pressure of 2.5 mmHg (CI 95% -3.6; -1.4, p less then 0.001) postoperatively. No association between the change in intraocular pressure and ultrasound time or effective phaco time was observed when the data were analyzed one at a time or in a multiple linear regression model. There was no association with sex, age, nuclear density, presence of pseudoexfoliation, duration of surgery, and time of ocular pressure measurement. Eyes with preoperative IOP ≥ 21 mmHg had a more significant IOP reduction after surgery (p less then 0.0001) as did eyes with an anterior chamber depth less then 2.5 mm (p = 0.01). Conclusion There was a decrease in intraocular pressure six months after FLACS in our study similar to that in the published literature for standard phacoemulsification. The use of ultrasound may not influence the size of the decrease, whereas the preoperative IOP and anterior chamber depth do. FLACS may be as valuable as standard phacoemulsification for cases where IOP reduction is needed postoperatively.Monitoring kidney transplant recipients for evidence of allograft rejection is essential to lower the risk of graft loss. The traditional method relies on serial checks in serum creatinine with a biopsy of the allograft if dysfunction is suspected. This is invasive, labor-intensive and costly. As such, there is widespread interest in the use of biomarkers to provide a noninvasive approach to detecting allograft rejection. One such biomarker is donor-derived cell-free DNA (ddcf-DNA). Here, we review the methodology for the determination of the amount/fraction of ddcf-DNA, evaluate the available data of its use in kidney transplantation and render an opinion in the clinical decision-making of these patients.Infections due to carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales (CPE) are increasing worldwide and are especially concerning in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Risk factors for CPE gut colonization in neonates need to be clarified. In this work, we describe the epidemiological and clinical features of CPE-colonized newborns and the infection control measures in a Portuguese NICU. We performed a prospective, observational, longitudinal, cohort study for surveillance of CPE colonization. Maternal and neonatal features of colonized newborns and surveillance strategy were described. A statistical analysis was performed with SPSS23.0, and significance was indicated by p-value ≤ 0.05. Between March and November 2019, CPE was isolated in 5.8% of 173 admitted neonates. Carbapenemase-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae were the most frequently isolated. There was no associated infection. Birth weight, gestational age, length of stay, and days of central line were the identified risk factors for CPE colonization (bivariate analysis with Student's t-test or Mann-Whitney U test, according to normality).
