Asp- /Asp- ion pairs, stabilized by the interaction between the NH 3 + group of a partner and the COO- group of the other, shows a quite constant binding energy (-8.1 ± 0.2 kcal/mol), whatever the pair type, and the relative orientation of the two interacting partners. This study suggests a first step to achieve a more realistic image of intermolecular interactions in aqueous environment, especially upon increasing concentration. It can also be considered as a preliminary attempt to assess the interactions of the Lys+ …Asp- /Glu- ion pairs stabilizing intra- and interchain interactions in proteins. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.OBJECTIVE To determine if a modified tissue-preserving palatopharyngoplasty could convert retropalatal concentric collapse to anteroposterior or lateral patterns of collapse on drug-induced sleep endoscopy (DISE) in patients who are not candidates for upper airway stimulation due to complete circumferential collapse at the velum. METHODS A prospective, nonconsecutive, single-blinded cohort study was performed by two sleep surgeons at a tertiary care center from 2015 to 2018. Inclusion criteria included adults > 18 years of age with a diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea with an Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI) > 15, a body mass index (BMI) less then  32, and less then  25% central apneas on polysomnography. Twelve patients with complete circumferential collapse underwent a modified palatopharyngoplasty. Postoperatively, a repeat sleep study was performed. A repeat DISE was recommended for those with incomplete surgical response (clinically and/or AHI). RESULTS Twelve patients with complete circumferential collapse were eligible for the study. Mean BMI was 30.5. Mean preoperative AHI was 54.0 events per hour. Following a modified palatopharyngoplasty, the mean AHI was reduced to 33.1 events per hour, and 100% (12 of 12) of the patients converted from a pattern of complete circumferential collapse to either no collapse at the level of the velum (3) or an anteroposterior pattern of collapse (9). CONCLUSION We demonstrate that a modified palatopharyngoplasty can successfully convert collapse patterns in patients with complete circumferential collapse. Further studies are required to determine the outcome of these patients following upper airway stimulation implantation. METHODS A retrospective chart review was performed on all cases of plunging ranula treated at the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Counties Manukau District Health Board, New Zealand, between 2001 and 2019. RESULTS There were 17 patients with bilateral plunging ranulas from a total of 187 plunging ranula patients. Eight patients were of Pacific Island descent; six were Maori; and three were Asian. There were no European patients with bilateral plunging ranulas. There were three types of bilateral plunging ranula patients 1) Metachronous plunging ranulas-Five patients presented with a unilateral plunging ranula with no evidence of a contralateral plunging ranula on initial imaging. Despite negative contralateral imaging findings, these patients developed a clinically evident contralateral plunging ranula 21 to 61 months later. 2) Synchronous plunging ranulas detected on imaging-Eight patients presented with a clinically evident unilateral plunging ranula but also had a contralateral plunging ranula detected on imaging. 3) Clinically evident synchronous plunging ranulas-Four patients presented with bilateral clinically evident plunging ranulas, which were also evident on imaging. Twelve patients underwent bilateral transoral sublingual gland excision and plunging ranula evacuation. CONCLUSION All patients with a unilateral plunging ranula should be advised of the potential for developing contralateral disease, and this should be emphasized in patients of Pacific Island, Maori, and Asian descent. These small molecule adjuvants act by different mechanisms to enhance the cytotoxicity in tumor cells and the therapeutic effect in cancers. These findings add to the list of strategies for enhancement of photodynamic therapy. This article is protected by copyright. The aims of this study were to (a) establish a reliable mathematical model to describe the longevity of cooled-stored sperm DNA integrity; (b) to examine the effect of seasonal variations on SDF. Ejaculates were cooled to 5°C, and SDF was analysed after 0, 6 and 24 hr of storage. The coefficient of determination (R2 ) was calculated after fine-tuning linear (LIN), exponential (EXP) and second order polynomial (POL) models. R2 was significantly higher (p  less then  .001) for POL than for LIN and EXP. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/vit-2763.html The rate of DNA degradation was calculated using the slopes of POL equations. After assessing the rate of change of the POL functions, significant differences between the acceleration of DNA fragmentation were found (p  less then  .01) among seasons, being higher for winter and summer than spring and autumn. In conclusion, DNA analysis of stallion sperm fits better to a second order polynomial mathematical model, being spring the best season to collect and process cooled stallion semen in order to maintain the DNA integrity of the stallion sperm. © 2020 Blackwell Verlag GmbH.
