Assess associations between exertional heat stroke (EHS) and sex, age, prior performance and environmental conditions, and report on resources needed for EHS cases at the Boston Marathon.
We analyzed participant characteristics, environmental data, and EHS medical encounters during the 2015-2019 Boston Marathon races.
Among 136,161 starters, there was an incidence of 3.7 EHS cases per 10,000 starters (95% CI, 2.8-4.9), representing 0.5% of all medical encounters. There were significant associations between sex and age (p<0.0001), sex and start wave (p<0.0001), and age group and start wave (p<0.0001). Sex was not significantly associated with increased EHS incidence, however, age younger than 30 years and assignment to the first two start waves were. All cases occurred at races with average wet bulb globe temperatures (WBGT) of 17°C-20°C. There was a linear correlation between EHS incidence and greater increases in WBGT from start to peak (R2 = 0.7688). The majority of cases (37, 72.5%) were racnters but require extensive resources and warrant risk mitigation efforts.

A cluster experimental design was used in this study to recruit registered nurses at two regional teaching hospitals in southern Taiwan as participants. The experimental group (n = 67) attended the 4-week (2-hours-per-week) 3R educational program. The control group (n = 57) received no intervention. The outcome variables, including compassion satisfaction, burnout, secondary traumatic stress, physical health, and mental heaon, secondary traumatic stress, and mental health. Nursing managers may apply programs that integrate compassion fatigue resiliency, mindfulness respiration, and relatives and friends' support to improve ProQOL and health in nurses.

Nurse practitioners (NPs) in Taiwan have practiced mainly in acute care hospitals since 2006. Although organizational support and level of support have been associated with the successful integration of NP roles and effective practice outcomes, organizational support in the context of NPs in inpatient settings is an area that has been rarely explored in the literature.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between organizational support and the practice outcomes of job satisfaction, care effectiveness, and intention to leave in NPs.
A national survey of 512 NPs was conducted that included a demographic characteristics datasheet, the Nurse Practitioner Primary Care Organizational Climate Questionnaire, the Misener Nurse Practitioner Job Satisfaction Scale, and the Nurse Practitioner Care Effectiveness Scale. Multiple regression analysis was applied to explore the specific factors associated with job satisfaction. The statistical significance level was set at .05 with a two-tailed test.
