Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is one of the most common congenital viral infections. Classically associated placental findings include chronic villitis with plasma cells, stromal hemosiderin deposition, and identification of viral inclusions in villous endothelial and stromal cells. We present a case of confirmed congenital CMV infection that lacked these classical findings, but demonstrated massive perivillous fibrin deposition (MPVFD). This is the first report of CMV associated with MPVFD. MPVFD is an uncommon placental lesion associated with adverse fetal outcomes and a high risk of recurrence. However, the recurrence risk in patients with an infectious cause may be lower in than patients with other associated clinical conditions.

The Maternal Mental Health in Canada, 2018/2019, survey reported that 18% of 7,085 mothers who recently gave birth reported "feelings consistent with postpartum depression" based on scores ≥7 on a 5-item version of the Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale (EPDS-5). The EPDS-5 was designed as a screening questionnaire, not to classify disorders or estimate prevalence; the extent to which EPDS-5 results reflect depression prevalence is unknown. We investigated EPDS-5 ≥7 performance relative to major depression prevalence based on a validated diagnostic interview, the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM (SCID).

We searched Medline, Medline In-Process & Other Non-Indexed Citations, PsycINFO, and the Web of Science Core Collection through June 2016 for studies with data sets with item response data to calculate EPDS-5 scores and that used the SCID to ascertain depression status. We conducted an individual participant data meta-analysis to estimate pooled percentage of EPDS-5 ≥7, pooled SCID major depression prevalence, and the pooled difference in prevalence.

A total of 3,958 participants from 19 primary studies were included. Pooled prevalence of SCID major depression was 9.2% (95% confidence interval [CI] 6.0% to 13.7%), pooled percentage of participants with EPDS-5 ≥7 was 16.2% (95% CI 10.7% to 23.8%), and pooled difference was 8.0% (95% CI 2.9% to 13.2%). In the 19 included studies, mean and median ratios of EPDS-5 to SCID prevalence were 2.1 and 1.4 times.

Prevalence estimated based on EPDS-5 ≥7 appears to be substantially higher than the prevalence of major depression. Validated diagnostic interviews should be used to establish prevalence.

Herein, we report a unique case of an 11-year-old boy who presented with a rapidly growing soft-tissue mass after biopsy of a stable fat-rich lesion present in the calf muscles since infancy, with Magnetic resonance imaging findings suggesting an intramuscular adipocytic tumor. The resection showed GF and DF. DF arising from a preexisting GF (the so-called "GF-DF sequence") is a well-documented phenomenon. Although immunohistochemistry was negative for nuclear β-catenin expression, a CTTNB1 S45F mutation, which has been associated with aggressive behavior in DF, was identified in both components using a next-generation sequencing-based molecular assay. This is the first time a mutation in CTNNB1 has been identified in GF and the GF-DF sequence, thus expanding our knowledge of the molecular pathogenesis of the GF-DF sequence and highlighting the role of molecular testing in pediatric soft-tissue tumors. The histologic findings of an adipocyte-rich intramuscular GF also are unique, expanding the morphological spectrum of GF and adding GF to the differential diagnosis of intramuscular lesions with an adipocytic component.AbstractTemperature is a crucial environmental component that imposes physiological constraints and ultimately produces variation in life-history traits. Temperatures experienced by mothers can influence offspring phenotypes, including growth and sex ratios, especially in ectothermic species. However, mechanisms by which thermal information can be passed onto offspring have been underexplored. Here, we investigated corticosterone as a potential mediator of thermal maternal effects. We held female jacky dragons (Amphibolurus muricatus) in two different thermal regimes (short [7 h] or long [11 h] basking treatments), then quantified plasma corticosterone levels and tested for correlations between the resulting corticosterone levels and reproductive outputs. Lizards in the long-bask treatment had significantly higher corticosterone levels than those in the short-bask treatment. Maternal corticosterone, in turn, had sex-dependent effects on offspring hatching size but was not associated with maternal reproductive effort or offspring sex or growth. In contrast, maternal body condition was strongly positively related to both reproductive output (including clutch size and total number of eggs) and offspring size at hatching but had no effect on offspring growth. Basking treatment also interacted with condition and corticosterone to affect egg mass and hatchling snout-vent length, respectively. When we tested for relationships between corticosterone levels and body condition, we found corticosterone to be negatively related to condition in long-bask lizards but only in the postbreeding season. These findings indicate that thermal opportunity alters physiology, with potential consequences for fitness. Moreover, the results suggest interactive influences of temperature, corticosterone, and condition as mediators of maternal effects.Dynamic stiffness tuning is a promising approach for shape reconfigurable systems that must adapt their flexibility in response to changing operational requirements. Among stiffness tuning technologies, phase change materials are particularly promising because they are size scalable and can be powered using portable electronics. However, the long transition time required for phase change is a great limitation for most applications. In this study, we address this by introducing a rapidly responsive variable rigidity module with a low melting point material and flexible thermoelectric device (f-TED). The f-TED can conduct bidirectional temperature control; thereby, both heating and cooling were accomplished in a single device. TNO155 By performing local cooling, the phase transition time from liquid to solid is reduced by 77%. The module in its rigid state shows 14.7 × higher bending stiffness than in the soft state. The results can contribute to greatly widening the application of phase transition materials for variable rigidity.
