Machias January 20 1858 Hon Gov M. Morrill Augusta

Dear Sir,

Isaac Bearce Esquire of Meddybemps, I learn, will be an applicant for the Indian Agency of the Passamaquoddy Tribe-

I have long known Mr. Bearce, as an active, honest, and intelligent Republican, and I have full confidence that if he should recieve the appointment, he would discharge the duties in an acceptable manner.

The present incumbent Mr. Smith has held the Office for some time, he holds other offices of emolument, and I have no doubt discharges the duties faithfully. I am on the most friendly terms with him & his family, yet I am constrained to say that in my opinion the interests of the Republican Party would be promoted by his removal, & the appointment of Mr. Bearce, and without intimating any thing whatever against Mr. Smith. I earnestly hope Mr. Bearce may recieve the appointment.

With much respect, I am your Most Obt Ignatius Sargent
