State of Maine.

To James M. Rogers, of Bowdoin, in our County of Lincoln, Esquire,

[to the left is a circle with the word “Seal” written inside and “Albion K. Parris,” underneath]

Greeting:

Whereas, the Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, by his Commission, under the seal of the said Commonwealth, on the twelfth day of June, in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and nineteen, with the advice and consent of the Council, assigned, constituted, appointed and Commissioned you to be one of our Justices of the Peace, within and for our said County of Lincoln, for and during the term of seven years, from the said twelfth day of June, aforesaid, if you should so long behave yourself well in the said Office; And whereas, the address of both branches of the Legislature of this State has been presented to our Governor and Council, requesting your removal from every civil and Military office which you now hold under this State; by which address it appears that you are guilty of the crime of having had in possession a certain false, forged and counterfeit bank bill or promissory note, purporting to have been issued for and in behalf of the President Directors and Company of the Kennebec Bank, and having uttered and tendered the same, in payment as true to one Sym[?] Gardner, knowing the same to be false, forged and counterfeit, with intent to defraud the same Gardner; And further that the Legislature believe, from credible information, that you have been extensively concerned in the importation and circulation of counterfeit bank bills within this State, to the great detriment of the citizens: Whereupon our Council have advised that you be removed from said office:

We therefore, command you, that you henceforth surcease the execution of the duties of said office, and the issuing of every legal precept under our authority.

Witness, Albion K. Parris, our Governor, and our seal hereunto affixed, at Portland, this thirteenth day of February in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and twenty three; and in the forty seventh year of the Independence of the United States of America.

By Command:

A: Nichols, Secretary of State
