To all to whom these presents shall come,
Greeting:

know Ye, That Enoch Lincoln, our Governor, reposing special trust and confidence in the integrity, ability and learning of Simon Greenleaf, of Portland in the County of Cumberland, Esquire, hath nominated, and by and with the advice and consent of our Council appointed the said Simon Greenleaf, Reporter of the Decisions of the Supreme Judicial Court:
We therefore, do hereby authorize and empower him to fulfil [fulfill] the duties of that Office according to law; and to have and to hold the same together with all the powers, privileges and emoluments thereto of right appertaining, unto him the said Simon Greenleaf, for the term of four years, if he shall so long behave himself well in said office, unless sooner removed by the Governor and Council for the time being.
In testimony whereof we have caused these Letters to be made Patent, and our Seal to be hereunto affixed. Witness our Governor, at the Council Chamber in Portland, the twenty fifth day of June, in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and twenty eight, and of the Independence of the United States the fifty second.

County of Cumberland ss: On the twelfth day of July A.D. 1828, personally appeared Simon Greenleaf of Portland in said County of Cumberland and took and subscribed the oaths prescribed by the Constitution of this State and a Law of the United States, to qualify him to discharge and execute the duties of the Office of Reporter of the Decisions of the Supreme Judicial Court within the State of Maine, to which he was appointed & Commissioned on the twenty fifth day of June A.D. 1828.
