State of Maine.

To all persons to whom these presents shall come,

Greeting:

[to the left is a circle with "Seal." inside it and "Enoch Lincoln” written under it]

Whereas, before our Justices of our Supreme Judicial Court, begun and holden at Wiscasset, within and for our County of Lincoln, on the fourth Tuesday of May, in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and twenty six; Samuel Smith, late resident of Bath, in our said County of Lincoln Mariner, was convicted of the crime of Manslaughter; and thereupon by our said Court was sentenced to be punished by solitary imprisonment in our State Prison for the term of two months, and afterwards by confinement to hard labor in said prison for the term of four years; a part of which sentence yet remains to be executed; and he the said Samuel Smith, has humbly supplicated Us for mercy:

Now Know Ye, That upon full consideration of the premises, We do hereby remit to him the said Samuel Smith, that part of the punishment aforesaid, which yet remains to be executed; of which all our Judges, Justices, Magistrates, and Officers of every denomination are to take notice.

Witness Enoch Lincoln, our Governor, with the advice and consent of our Council, and our Seal hereunto affixed, at Portland, the thirtieth day of June, in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and twenty eight; and in the fifty second year of the Independence of the United States of America.
