State of Maine.

To all to whom these Presents shall come.

Greeting:

Know Ye, that Enoch Lincoln, our Governor, reposing special trust and confidence in the integrity ability and discretion of John K. Smith of Portland in the County of Cumberland, Esquire, hath nominated, and by and with the consent of our Council, appointed the said John Kilby Smith Inspector of Hops for this State:

We therefore do hereby authorize and empower him to fulfil [fulfill] the duties of that office according to law; and to have and to hold the same, together with all the powers privileges and emoluments thereto of right appertaining unto him the said John Kilby Smith, for the term of four years if he shall so long behave himself well in said Office unless sooner removed by the Governor and Council for the time being.

In Witness whereof we have caused these Letters to be made Patent, and our Seal to be hereunto affixed. Witness our Governor, at the Council Chamber in Portland, the twenty seventh day of June, in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and twenty eight; and of the Independence of the United States the fifty second.

On the fourteenth day of October A.D. 1828, personally appeared John Kilby Smith, of Portland, in said County of Cumberland and took and subscribed the oaths prescribed by the Constitution of this State, and a Law of the United States, to qualify him to discharge and execute the duties of the Office of Inspector of Hops for the State to which he was appointed and Commissioned on this twenty seventh day of June A.D. 1828. Before me Horatio Southgate Authorized by Dedimus Potestatum
