Bangor, June 6, 1861

Dear Sir --

Our old compatriot in the Whig Party 25 years ago -- Since departed -- Moses L. Appleton, left a widow and two sons all very excellent Republicans -- The oldest son is about 22 years of age & is now sergeant major in the 2 Maine Regt. He is a young man of fine ability, good habits, a military taste, & is quite a proficient in military matters. When 16 or 17 years old he got up a fine company of boys, which he drilled admirably & got great [?] therefor -- He is very popular among those who know him.

I write this for the purpose of suggesting him for the office of major or adjutant in the 6th Regt. or some other Regiment if the 6th is supplied.

I am satisfied no better appoint --
