and ascertain if a quorum was present; who having attended to the duty assigned them reported that one hundred and forty two members were present and that seventy four only were required to constitute a quorum.

A message was sent to the Senate notifying them that a quorum of the House are assembled and requesting their attendance in the Representatives Chamber forthwith that both Branches of the Legislature may there be qualified-

The members of the Senate came in accordingly, and had seats assigned them by the Chairman.

A message was sent to the Governor informing him that both branches of the Legislature are assembled in the Representatives Chamber, ready to be qualified and requesting him to attend there, and administer to them the oaths required to qualify them to enter upon the discharge of their respective duties.

Accordingly the Governor, attended by the Council, Secretary of State & Treasurer, preceded by the Sheriff of Cumberland came, in, when the members of the Senate were first qualified by taking and subscribing the oaths and declarations required by the Constitution to qualify them for the duties of their Station - and then the aforenamed members of the House of Representatives were also qualified by taking and subscribing the oaths and declarations required by the Constitution - The Governor, Council, Secretary & Treasurer there[?] withdrew - the Senators also withdrew.

Ordered that Messrs Chase of Kittery, Woodbury of Minot, Hastings of Bethel, Abbot of Vassalboro’, Moore of Anson Quinnam[?] of Wiscasset, Pond of Buxport, Bent of Bangor, & Mowry of Lubec be a Committee to receive, sort & count the votes for a Clerk, and the ballots being taken it appeared
