Hancock representatives to sign a petition to that effect. I do believe that much republicans as then gave them names to it, regret now what they did.

It has been said by some that Mr. Jarvis is unpopular. This ought to be understood to come from the mouths of those who are interested he should be so &, who affirm what they only wish. I have no doubt it was imprudent in Mr. Jarvis' friends to support him for a member of Congress at the time and under the circumstances they did; but I do not think that a fair ________ of the alienation in ____ is held by the republicans of this district.

Theser are two reasons why he was not elected Senator: He had been a director of the Castine Bank & had prevented them from assuring more bills than allowed by their charter in consequence of which they had burned him out the year before and feared to have him in the legislation. The other is, there was no concert between the republicans in the different sides of the river. Since that election his popularity has been increasing. He is certain if he had desired he might have been nominated for the next representative to Congress.

I forward the enclosed address by the request of the gentlemen who signed it and not by that of Mr. Jarvis. They hope your Excellency will not return him the life deserving because he professes too proud & honorable feelings to allow others to petition in his behalf.

I presume you are well acquainted with the personal merits of Mr. Jarvis & I need not therefore mention them. This father's family owned its misfortunes to its attachment to the cause of the revolution. He & his brothers have long been guided by those principles which your excellency has well cherished. Their assertions have made this county republican. Mr. Carr & Mr. Whiting were _____ devoted to the cause of _____________ country while living. I believe they had the honor of being your excellency's personal friends — ____ continue.
