Monday January 14th, 1828

Met according to adjournment.

Message from the Governor.

To the Senate & House of Representatives

I transmit for your consideration a letter from Mr Daveis addressed to me personally, but, under existing circumstances considered as belonging to you. It will be perceived that the Lieut. Governor of New Brunswick, while he has received Mr Daveis as a private citizen with the respect the character of that gentleman must every where command has been restrained from testifying through him to the State of maine the regard it was hoped would be secured by the sending an amicable request by such a Messenger, principally for information to be placed before you & the general government
While we may appreciate the nature of the restriction on the power of his Majestys Lieut. Governor of New Brunswick in such a manner as to entertain sentiments the most foreign from resentment as to the course he has been compelled to pursue, I have the satisfaction to express my anticipation that all the objects of Mr Daveis mission will soon be accomplished and duly reported.
