 Williamsburgh 10th April 1824

Mr William Carleton

Sir I rec'd last month Your letter of 23 March saying that you had sent to Jacob McGawdry[?] to Note against Stephen Giddings to collect + pay the amount due for taxes + redemption of John Erwin's land. It is a little unfortunate the money did not come [something stricken] instead of the letter + one week seems [inserted] for the time of redemption expired last Saturday. However, a tiny desire the collector will delay the deed for a time longer in order to give you a significant chance -- + I am willing to say that if the money is received on or before the [something stricken] first day of June [inserted] next the deed shall not be given + the sale shall be cancelled but if not received by that time answer any further for it [inserted] -- The sum necessary to settle it now will be $32.67. The reason of this is that there was an omission in the amount I stated to [inserted] your brother, of Three Dollars said for advertising in Portland & adding to the other [inserted] charges with interest required by law to 1st June next, together with the interest in the taxes since that time will make it #32.67 instead of $27.44 -- As per subscribed acct [?] -- Taxes 1821 [inserted] for which the land was sold -- 6.58
