State of Maine

To all who shall see these presents,

Greetings:

[on left of following paragraph is a circle with the word "Seal." underlined inside it and "William King" written under it]

Know ye, that William King, our Governor reposing special trust and confidence in the ability, patriotism, valor and military science of Samuel Cony, of Augusta, in the County of Kennebec, Esquire, hath nominated, and by and with the advise and consent of our Council, appointed the said Samuel Cony, Adjutant General of the Militia of this State; with the rank of Brigadier General.

We therefore, do hereby authorize and empower him to discharge the duties of that Office according to law, and military rule and discipline. And all inferior Officers are hereby commanded to obey him in his said capacity; and he will observe and follow such orders and instructions, as he shall, from time to time, receive from the Commander in chief.

To have and to hold the same Office, together with all the powers, privileges and emoluments thereto of appertaining, unto him the said Samuel Cony, during the pleasure of our Governor and Council for the time being.

The testimony whereof, We have caused these fellows to be made patient, and our Seal to be hereunto affixed: witness our Governor, at the Council chamber, in Portland, the fourteenth day of June in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and twenty and of the Independence of the United States the forty fourth.
