Afternoon. Met according to adjournment.

Report of the committee on finance to whom was referred an order directing them to inquire into the expediency of exempting persons on account of age, infirmity &c from a poll tax, that legislation on the subject is inexpedient, was read & accepted.

Bill - to apportion and assess on the inhabitants of this State a Tax of forty nine thousand, nine hundred & ninety four dollars was read 1st & 2d time & this afternoon at five o'clock assigned for a 3d Reading.

Bill to prevent foreigners from exercising acts of jurisdiction within this State by serving civil or criminal process, was read a third time & passed to be engrossed. Sent up for concurrence.

Bill giving additional power to Justices of the Peace in certain cases, came from the Senate amended for concurrence and the House adopted the amendments & passed the Bill to be engrossed with the Senate.

Bill authorizing the Selectmen & Assessors of Towns & plantations to purchase books & maps of certain descriptions, laid on the table by Mr. Stevens of Belfast was read 1st & 2d times & tomorrow at 10 o'clock assigned for a 3rd reading.

Bill additional act respecting Sheriffs, came down, the Senate adhering to their votes adopting sundry amendments to said Bill - The House refuse to adopt said amendments, adhere to their former vote, propose a conference & appoint as Conferees on their part Messrs. Appleton of Alfred, Clark of Hallowell & Jewett of Bowdoinham. Sent up.
