To all to whom these Presents shall come.

Greeting:

Know Ye, that Albion K. Parris, our Governor, reposing special trust and confidence in the integrity, ability and discretion of John Kilby Smith, of Portland, in the County of Cumberland, Esquire, hath nominated, and by and with the advice and consent of our Council, appointed the said John Kilby Smith, Inspector of Hops for this State:

We, therefore, do hereby authorize and empower him to fulfil [fulfill] the duties of that office according to law; and to have and to hold the same, together with all the powers, privileges and emoluments thereto of right appertaining, unto him the said John Kilby Smith, for the term of four years, if he shall so long behave himself well in said Office, unless sooner removed by the Governor and Council for the time being.

In Witness, whereof, We have caused these Letters to be made Patent, and our Seal to be hereunto affixed. Witness our Governor, at the Council Chamber, in Portland, the tenth day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty four; and of the Independence of the United States the forty ninth.

County of Cumberland ss. On the second day of October A.D. 1824. personally appeared John Kilby Smith, of Portland in said County Esquire, and took and subscribed the oaths prescribed by the Constitution of this State and a Law of the United States to qualify him to discharge and execute the duties of the Office of Inspector of Hops for the State to which he was appointed and commissioned, on the tenth day of September A.D. 1824. Before one Horatio Southgate, Authorized by Dedimus Potestatum
