the Governor and Council to employ at the expence [expense] of the State an able and experienced Engineer to survey & estimate the expence of constructing Canals in this State, whenever satisfactory evidence shall be given to the Governor, that such Canal would be of public benefit or utility, and for the interest of the State, with leave to report &c - Sent up for concurrence.

On motion of Mr Whiting of Whiting, Ordered, that the joint committee on the Militia & Military affairs be directed to inquire into the expediency of exempting by law the noncommissioned Officers and privates who actually perform Military duty from paying a Poll tax for the support of the Government - read & passed. Sent up for concurrence.

Bill - additional to an act concerning the Assessment and collection of taxes, came from the Senate amended for concurrence and the House refused to adopt the amendments proposed by the Senate and adhered to their vote of 22d inst. passing the same to be engrossed. Sent up.

Bill - in addition to an Act entitled an act respecting Banks was read a third time & passed to be engrossed in concurrence with the Senate.

Bill - to incorporate the Master Wardens & Members of Meridian Splendor Lodge, was read a third time & passed to be engrossed in concurrence with the Senate.

Petition of Joseph B Prince for remuneration for expenses incurred in prosecuting a felon, was read and referred to the committee on the Judiciary. Sent up for concurrence.

On motion of Mr Evans of Gardiner, Ordered that the House hold two sessions daily except on Saturdays - commencing at nine oclock in the forenoon & three oclock in the afternoon until otherwise ordered - read & passed.
