The Convention was called to order by Mr. Harris of Portland & Mr. White of Monmouth was requested to officiate as Chairman.

A Committee was appointed to examine the credentials of members & report whether a quorum be present who attended to the duty assigned them & reported in the affirmative.

A message was sent to the officiating Governor informing him that a quorum of the House were assembled and requesting his attendance at the Representatives Chamber to qualify the Representatives Elect to enter upon the discharge of their official duties.

Accordingly the officiating Governor attended by the Council & Secretary of State & preceded by the Sheriff of Cumberland came in when the members elect took & subscribed the oaths required by the Constitution to qualify them to enter upon the discharge of their official duties.

A committee consisting of Messrs. Mitchell of Portland, Powers of Sanford & Bartlett of Garland was appointed to receive, sort & count the votes for a Clerk & counting the same it appeared the whole number given in was One Hundred & Thirty nine - necessary to constitute a choice seventy - that Thornton McGaw had Eighty four - James Brooks Fifty two and three scattering - & Thornton McGaw was declared elected & being present took & subscribed the oath of office which was administered to him by a Magistrate of the County of Cumberland as follows I, Thornton McGaw do solemnly swear that I will faithfully discharge to the best of my abilities the duties incumbent upon me as clerk of the House of Representatives of the State of Maine. So help me, God.
