319 The Committee on Engrossed Bills report as duly engrossed - Bill to incorporate the Waterville Gardiner & Boston Packet Company


to prevent the filling up & obstruction of St Croix river


to change the names of certain persons


respecting Colleges


additional to the several acts relating to the taking of salmon shad & alewives in the Kennebec River


to incorporate the Proprietors of the Fulton Steam Mills

which were severally passed to be enacted - sent up for concurrence. The same Committee also report as duly engrossed Resolve providing for the payment of accounts against the State which was finally passed - sent up for concurrence.

Resolutions respecting the Tariff & Internal Improvement were twice read & Mr. Dummer of Hallowell moved to amend the resolutions by inserting as follows, to wit "Resolve that it is expedient by wise laws to protect the industry of our country against foreign influence or foreign skill or foreign competition & the question upon so amending was then taken by yeas & nays as follows yeas [?]38 nays 60. It was then moved to postpone the Resolutions indefinitely & the question thereon was taken by yeas & nays as follows yeas 41 nays 67 - and the question upon passing the resolutions in concurrence was then taken by yeas & nays as follows yeas 70 nays 42 (for yeas & nays see pages 503.504.508)

Bill to authorize the Governor with advice of Council to appoint a superintendent of Public Schools came from the Senate for concurrence referred to the next Legislature & the House recede from their former vote respecting the Bill and concur with the Senate.
