To his excellency Gov Washburn
With much pleasure we present the name of Lewis R Haskell to your favorable consideration for a Lieut
Mr Haskell has been in the Service of his country during the past year. Volunteered at the first tap of the drum to aid in suppressing this gigantic & wicked rebellion for the battle at bull run for his gallantry and bravery he won the esteem & admiration of his comrades and in particular his commanding officer Capt John S Sampson of Milo, We Sincerely believe that he will make a brave and efficient officer. Mr Haskell was taken prisoner and was at Richmond for several months As soon as he was relieved from prison we again found him ready and anxious to resume his place in the army
Believing that such are the right stamp of men to lead our soldiers to victory we hope you will find a place for him where he may be the most useful
Very Respectfully your most servts
Phineas Tolman John S Sampson J H Macomber
