Order from the House of Representatives, instructing the committee on the Judiciary to enquire into the expediency of authorizing towns, whenever any town shall by vote so determine, to appoint commissioners of highways with powers similar to those granted to the town of Portland instead of highway surveyors, as now by law established, read and passed in concurrence.

Order from the House of Representatives, instructing the committee on Literary Institutions, to enquire into the expediency of requiring of the superintending School committees in the several towns and plantations in this State to take the oaths required of other town officers before entering upon the discharge of their respective duties, to receive or compensation for their services, and ne liable to a forfeiture for nonperformance of their respective trusts, read and passed in concurrence.
