Brewer Nov. 18th 1861

To his Excelency Israel Washburn Jr. Gov. of the State of Maine

Dear Sir I have a son in the 2d Maine in Company C his frinds in Brewer & Bangor have thought that he aught to be promoted to some place, and would like to have had him appointed in Capt. Swetts Battrey, and some of prominent citizens of Brewer & Bangor went to Capt Swett and named the subject to him and he said to them that he would like to have him much whereupon his friends got up a petition of the citizens of Brewer & Bangor and sent it to your Hon. by Major Dole and also wrote Col. Roberts and Vice President Hamlin for them to use their influence with the War Department, and I received a letter from my son, Cyrus A. Washburn that he could be transfered from the 2d Maine on the return of Major Dole from Augusta he called on Capt. Swett and told him what he had done and asked him to write you a private letter and he said he could not do it - for all the places were taken up and
