John Benson [?] Dec. 7 For Mr. Field to be appt'd.
Newport Dec 7, 1861
Governor,
If it is consistent with your views, I am anxious that J.B. Field of Bangor who has been recruiting a squad in Ellsworth, should have a commission in the Army.
I think he would make a good officer. He is a nephew of mine, and has long been anxious of a place in the service above a private.
He was in Gen. Bushman's staff and I believe acquited himself acceptably.
Yours very Resp'y John Benson
I Washburn, Jr. Gov. of Maine
