1862 ( 4 ) March 20 to the smallest possible extreme, the men were provided with small rubber " shelter tents" which they carried with their knapsacks- the only canvas tents for which transportations was allowed being those for the field and staff.- the company officers having been requested by Col. Berry to reduce their baggage and ( ? ) to which they could carry on their backs.- Monday ( 24th ) our camp was secured two miles to the plains beyond Hampton, where we lay till April 4th .- improving the leisure time by company, battalion, and brigade drills-
Tuesday ( 25th ) the regiment being on parade, a communication from Gen Berry- our late Colonel, but now appointed Brig. Gen.- was ( ? ), in which he stated that having been ordered to report to Gen. McClellan for orders, it was necessary that he should now resign the command of the regiment. Also in communications from Maj. Walker the senior field officers, assuming the command. The appointments of Maj. Walker as Colonel, Capt L D Carver as Lt. Colonel, and Capt. E M Smith as Major were received a few days after -thus filling all vacancies, Capt Smith, however declined the position of Major, and on April 3rd was detached
