night, succeeded in capturing a party of the enemy consisting of one Ass't Adj : Gen, one Lt of Cavalry, G. W. Dunbar, Ephraim Cross and Geo K Hall. camped at Centerville and remained there during Sunday ( 31st ) and Monday ( Sept. 1st ) till 3 P.M., when we moved out on the road to Fairfax Court House, towards which a flanking force of the enemy were advancing from the north, with the intention of occupying the road and cutting off our trains moving to the rear.- We engaged the enemy at a place called Chantilly, about a mile too the left of the road and three miles from Centerville- relieving Steven's division, which had been holding the enemy in check with severe loss.- Our regiment was met with a most galling fire from a superior force of the rebels and soon retired to a more advantages position a few ( ? ) in the rear , where a most effective fire was kept up for an hour and a half, till, the men & cartridges being nearly used up, we retired in good order, carrying off all men wounded, while another regiment took our place, but night having come on, the firing very soon ceased - Our loss in this engagement was 8 killed, 54 wounded, and2 missing, out of about 240 engaged- Lt Crabtree of Co. C, who was slightly wounded
