Camp of the 20th Regt. Maine Vols. near Warrington Va Nov 16, 1862

To His Excellency I. Washburn Jr Governor of Maine Dear Sire

Recent chan-ges in this army corps leave all this Division without Brigadier Generals to comma-nd them. Recognizing the eminent qualifications of Col. Ames, Maj. Genl. Hooker has written a letter earnestly expressing his [following in quotations underlined] "anxiety, that Col. Ames be promoted to the rank of Brigadier General and be assigned to the duty in his com-mand." The past services of Col. Ames in this war are as great and as honorable as those of any other officer in the army. And among military men no one sustains a higher reputation. We need not say more to you who know him so well, but may add that Generals Howard + Berry are warmly engaged in his behalf. We trust you will recommend him to the Pres-ident and give your aid in securing his promo-tion -- We are Dear Gov. Respectfully your Obt. Servts -- J. L. Chamberlain Charles D. Gilmore
