Head Quarters, First Brigade Morello Division July 30th 1862. His Excellency The Governor of Maine, Permit me to address you in behalf of my young fried Dr A.D. Palmer Assistant Surgeon of the 2nd Maine Reg't of Volunteers, in whose welfare I feel a deep interest in consequence of his recent noble conduct in assisting me in taking care of the wounded soldiers of the army at the various hospitals before Richmond on the 27th [ ] when the battle raged fiercely and our hospital was struck frequently by cannon balls and shells he spoke out bravely and said he would never desert the wounded soldier but would remain with me to the last and perform his duty cheerfully which he did for a period of three weeks with the utmost devotion and efficiency. He had [acquainted] himself with great satisfaction to me with credit to himself and with honor to his state. It was a good school to him and well did he employ his time not only in performing the move around work of nursing and lifting about the wounded but in performing the more responsible duties of the surgeon.
