Tuesday. Oct. 19. 1952 Pleasant after the storm. About the middle of last night, we were waked by a severe tempest on lightning + thunder + rain. The flashes were most vivid + terrific, + the instantaneous discharges of heavan's artillery extremely stunningly [underlined] sublime: altogether more startling for being out of the season, + at such an hour of the night. I generally sleep in a night tempest there being something, I think, in the atmosphere, that makes one drowsy, but I did not sleep last night during the tempest.
