82 Skirmish. we found out where the rebels was and then we went back to our forces and they began to shell them. we come back abought 2 miles and stoped all night

August 30 This morning we started at daylight and some [illegible] where the main body of our army is. They are preparing to begin the battle again this morning. commenced to cannonade abought 9 oclock A M. at noon or abought 1 oclock the battle commenced with terrible fierceness. There was one steady roar of cannon and musketry perfect clouds of shot. Shell and bullets thousands was killed and wounded. I was ordley for General Porter. The shells and bullets fell around me on all sides. men and horses fell on both side of me but still I escaped unharmed. it must have been the kind hand of Providence that saved me. I am thankful to God that he saved me through this terrible battle. the rebels drove us back on our left wing nearly a mile. at 6 oclock I was sent with a dispatch to Centerville 6 miles from the field of battle.
