no justice business.

In Ellsworth there are now five justices viz four federalists (of whom one is an Englishman) & one democrat. This Brimmer is a Scotchman by birth, & a tory by education, he is no admirer of a King unless he wear a crown upon his head & he has never been thought of consequence enough by his political friends to be made a justice of. If appointed he would be entirely under the influence of the federal lawyer at Ellsworth, & in giving Sentence he would look rather to the political sentiments of the parties than to the merits of the case -

Should any corroboration of my opinion be required I do not hesitate to say that it may be procured from every republican in Ellsworth whose opinion ought to be of any weight.

I am very respectfully Sir Yr. Mo. Obdt Serv Leo.d Jarvis

William King Governor of the State of Maine
