Portland June 16th 1820

Wm King Gov

Having been advised that I was one among a number of candidates named for the office of Sheriff of this county & not liking the mode of petitioning nor deeming it necessary, I have taken the liberty of addressing you as the most direct way of informing you of my wishes, if you upon inquiry should think proper to make the nomination it will be very gratifying to me who has uniformly been a supporter of the General Government & as you know of the Independence of Maine I have no better friend than some of the Gentlemen of your Council & none that know me or my situation better than they do & presuming their advise will in some measure guide you in the nomination I have thought whatever recommendation I could get would not be of any importance or give you any further knowledge of my character than may be obtained in the Council Chamber.

I remain

Yours Respectfully

John Spring
