One of the chief gens [one underlined] was the Bears, Aliwaysoose, or Mitchels.  In 1917 Lewey Ketchum said that they came from over to Quoddy and that all Mitchels were Bears [one underlined] - "Aliwaysoosec" they called the family.  He had never heard of old "French Michel" or "French Messer"  Said Peol Mitchel's folks came from over east. Said the Tobique Bears (of whom Louis, Pete and Ambrose were some) were called Wassop.  Asked him about Joe Polis drawing a bear in a canoe & whether Joe was son of the Polis Wassop of Gen Blake's roster.  Said it looked so.  That Joe's mother might have been Bear.  (Said this before I told him of Polis Wassop, showing descent in the female line)

Clara (Mitchel) Neptune's account of her own family was [struck through] is that there were three brothers (1) Francis [underlined] Mitchel was Clara's father.  (2) Dr. Sebattis [underlined] Mitchel, nicknamed "Lobster", was married (wife, Maggie) but childless and adopted Clara.  (3.) Joseph Mary Mitchel, killed by the Irish in Bangor, was father of Gov. Sebattis Mitchel and of Lame Joe Mitch.  {...[?] living in 1887 seen by me}  Father called Joe (senior), Joe Mary Mitchel.

Joe Mitchel of Joe Mitchel's Rock was a cousin to Sebattis.  He was father of Mitch Francis and John Francis.  (Sebat Shay and Joe Francis said to be half brothers, illegitimate by Mitchel's wife.  They were both cousins of Lewis Ketchum.

Clara (Mitchel) Neptune's grandmother was Mary Malt (a Necola) who was dau. of Gov. John Neptune but I do not understand how that can be.
