The background was the fire behind which was a fender of two pieces of spruce bark about 6 & 8 ft long. On one the Tahmunts [?] had painted a moose and two men following. On the other Piel drew two canoes with three men in them (Staples then intended to go back) going up [one struck through] down river, (the water indicated by the curl of the waves & the slant the direction) and painted below Ma-ha-ta-pina mi-lo-wi Mat-tawaska, we three are going down to Mattawaska. The onlookers at the dance were Leonard Staples & father.
